Mackerel Fishing from Ilfracombe: The Complete Beginner’s Guide
August 14, 2026Lundy Island is England’s only statutory Marine Conservation Zone, and the diving it offers reflects that status. The ban on bottom trawling within the zone, in place for over 50 years, has allowed the reef and rock communities around the island to recover to a condition that is genuinely unusual by the standards of the English coast. Water clarity is exceptional, marine life diversity is high, and the experience of diving here is qualitatively different from most UK dive sites.
Wild Frontier Charters operates dedicated dive charter trips to Lundy from Ilfracombe. Here is what to expect.
The Dive Environment
Lundy sits 12 miles offshore from Ilfracombe in the Bristol Channel. The island itself is three miles long and rises to 120 metres on its western side, where the Atlantic swell breaks against sheer cliff faces. The diving environment varies dramatically between the sheltered eastern side and the exposed western coast.
The eastern side offers the most accessible and reliable diving, with kelp forest habitats giving way to rocky reefs at depth. Visibility on a good day frequently exceeds 10 metres and can reach 15 to 20 metres in optimal conditions. The west coast offers more dramatic terrain but is dependent on calm Atlantic weather.
The Wildlife
The grey seal colony at Lundy is the defining wildlife encounter for most divers. The seals at Lundy are habituated to divers and exhibit the kind of curious, interactive behaviour that makes an encounter here genuinely different from seeing seals from the surface. Juveniles in particular are playful and will investigate equipment, circle divers, and maintain close contact for extended periods.
Beyond seals, the kelp forest habitats support exceptional fish populations including large ballan wrasse, pollack in the mid-water, cuckoo wrasse on the reef, and shoals of bream. The rocky substrate hosts nudibranchs, starfish, urchins, and a diversity of invertebrate life that reflects the protected status of the water.
What Level of Diver Is Lundy Suitable For?
The accessible eastern sites are suitable for qualified divers from PADI Open Water or BSAC Ocean Diver level upward. Depths on the main reef sites range from 5 to 25 metres. The more exposed western sites and deeper water beyond the main reef require greater experience and appropriate qualifications.
We will discuss your dive experience when you book and plan the programme accordingly. Certified dive guides are available for groups who want guided dives on the main sites.
The Crossing
The crossing from Ilfracombe to Lundy takes approximately 90 minutes by RIB. The Bristol Channel can be lumpy and the crossing should be treated as an offshore voyage: full sea-sickness precautions are advisable for anyone prone to motion sickness. The crossing itself is often wildlife-rich, with gannets, shearwaters, and porpoise regularly encountered.
Combining Diving with Snorkelling and Seal Swims
Lundy dive trips can be structured to include snorkelling and seal swim sessions alongside scuba diving, which works well for groups of mixed qualification. Non-diving guests can experience the seals and the clarity of the water at the surface while certified divers explore the reef below.
